What does this Italian buy at Kroger?
Here are a few things that regularly make it into my cart:
🇮🇹 Giardiniera. Italy’s way of preserving vegetables in vinegar. I love serving it with prosciutto and cheese during aperitivo, or simply putting it on the table when friends come over.
🍫 Nutella & Go. My kids love it. Is it the healthiest snack in the world? No. Do I buy it sometimes anyway? Absolutely. I still remember my mom picking me up from kindergarten with my favorite sweet merenda.
🍝 Pasta Rummo. Pasta is a matter of taste, and this one is my favorite. If I find it, I buy it.
🥣 Tiny pasta. A staple in my pantry. Perfect for soups and perfect if you have young kids.
✨ Panko breadcrumbs. Not Italian, but they make everything crunchier. I even use them in my vegetarian sformato (check the reel) when I don’t have stale bread at home.
☕ Lavazza coffee. This was actually my first time buying it at Kroger, but Lavazza is a familiar name in many Italian homes and a solid choice when your usual brand isn’t available.
🌟 Save this reel for your next Kroger trip and tell me: what should I add to my cart next time?

I spent most of my life believing chocolate was the answer to every dessert question.
Then I got older.
And somehow I became the person making lemon tart!
My mother always said this would happen. Apparently mothers are right far more often than I’d like to admit 😅
This tart has a buttery crust, a creamy lemon filling, and just enough freshness to make it feel perfect for hot summer days without requiring any complicated pastry skills.
The kind of dessert that looks elegant on the table but is surprisingly simple to make.
Save this one for your next summer dinner, picnic, or gathering.

3 RECIPES TO TRY BEFORE THE END OF SPRING!
I don’t know who decided that spring should be so short, but before asparagus disappears and we fully enter watermelon season, here are 3 recipes I’ve been loving over the years.
Yesterday I brought the Parmesan Asparagus Quiche to a gathering and came home with an empty baking dish (which is usually a good sign).
The Spring Salad with Halloumi, Roasted Peppers, and Tomato Confit is the salad I make for people who don’t get excited about salads. (People like me.)
And the Lemon Tart is one of those desserts that looks elegant, tastes fresh, and somehow feels exactly right for these hot days we’ve already started having here in Texas.
All three are perfect for picnics, backyard dinners, potlucks, or whenever you’re told, “Can you bring something?” and immediately regret saying yes.
The recipes are in today’s free newsletter. Link in bio.
And if you have a friend who never shows up empty-handed, share this post with them.

Ciao! I’m Giada.
I’m Italian, I have two kids, and I recently moved to the United States.
I spend a good portion of my day trying to answer the question: “What’s for dinner?” preferably before somebody starts asking for snacks.
So if you love Italian food, you’re in the right place.
Not the Instagram version of Italian food. Not the “I spent 14 hours making fresh pasta” version either.
The kind Italians actually cook at home. The dinners that save a Tuesday night. The products worth buying. The ones that aren’t. The little tricks that make a difference. And all the things I’m learning while trying to cook Italian food with American ingredients and American supermarkets.
Subscribe to my Substack newsletter for more stories and recipes (link in BIO) and follow along to keep up with my Italian recipes updates💛
Don’t forget to share this post with that friend who says “I LOVE Italian food” 🍝

Italian Vegetarian dish: Sformato. it’s not beautiful. It doesn’t slice perfectly. It collapses a bit. But it’s so good!
More details about how to make this cheesy vegetarian dish it in my latest newsletter “the sformato that was supposed to be a strudel”. LINK IN BIO ⬆️

This is the dinner an Italian mom makes when the puff pastry dies and the kids still need to eat.
This was supposed to be a spinach strudel. But the puff pastry smelled suspicious, looked suspicious, and there was absolutely no way I was going to use it.
So now I had cooked spinach, random vegetables from the freezer, potatoes, and cheese slowly waiting in the fridge drawer. Something had to be done!
So the failed strudel became a sformato. Potatoes, spinach, parmesan, random cheese, eggs, and whatever vegetables need saving. Crispy on top, soft in the middle, and somehow better than the original plan.
The kind of dinner that looks comforting, feeds (almost) everybody, and quietly cleans out the fridge at the same time.
The full story — including the Texas snowstorm, terrible Starbucks coffee, and recipe variations for picky eaters — is on Substack. Free link in bio.

Crostini, croutons, crispy bread bites — call them what you want, but just make them, don’t buy them 🙃
Use your weekly bread leftovers and keep a jar on hand: perfect for kids’ snacks (mine love them), salads, or soups. They keep well in a sealed jar 🥖🫙

This is my Easiest Italian Focaccia!
Trust me you can’t mess it up, even if you use the wrong flour (like I did here 😅) - sometimes you need to use what you have and make it work anyway!
